Hard water mineral stains are caused when glass is exposed to water with a high mineral content and the water is allowed to dry naturally on the pane. This process is excellerated in high temperature conditions which, if you have windows that get a lot of sun, is not unusual.

The water evaporates and the calcium and magnesium deposits are left behind to adhere to the glass. Over a period of time these deposits can be seen as white spots on the glass and the window loses its clarity.

While you can make sure that there are no poorly adjusted sprinklers making the problem worse or that you don't get the windows wet while washing down your house, there is almost no way of preventing this mineral stain build up over a period of time. Nearly all homes have some degree of mineral deposit on some of their windows.

Hard water mineral stain deposits are most commonly found on weather-facing windows, windows that are near shrubbery that is close to the house, windows over flower boxes or at the bottom of glass panels adjacent to decks or patios.

No amount of normal cleaning will return a window that is mineral stain damaged to it's former clarity. Using 'elbow grease' may damage the window further and over-the-counter or hardware store type products, generally don't work very well.

There are some commercially available products and removal techniques that do work well. Each window restoration job is different and three factors help me decide which product will be the most effective.
